In the next Illustrator trapping lesson, is a partial overlap.
Add a stroke to your object (the letter A in this example,) Then convert the stroke into a path.
Select Object in the tab then path. Then select ‘outline stroke.’
Then, fill the outlined stroke with a mix of the two colors that need trapping. Use the Pathfinder tool to subtract from the shape of your stroke.
