My first semester at my time at Southeast Technical College I took a psychology class, I really enjoyed it and learned a lot! One thing that stood out to me was how much color actually effects our mood and behaviors.
I always knew the basic knowledge of how yellow is usually happy and blue is sad, but there’s actually a lot more to it than that and how important this can be when incorporating it into design.
Warm colors like red, orange and yellow represent strong emotions ranging from warmth ,passion or hostility. Whereas cool colors like blue, purple and green represent a much more calmer feeling. It’s important to know the effects of colors when designing or you may choose a color that conflicts too much with the message that you want to send.
A lot of restaurants will choose colors on the warmer side because it will make you feel more energetic and even hungry. It also makes more sense for hospitality places to stay on the cooler color side because it makes people feel more calm and comfortable to be there rather than a loud color that may be overwhelming.
I’m really glad I took this psych class and learned a more in depth reasoning as to why we may feel a certain way when surrounded by color and design choices.
